When sunspot activity is low earth temperatures drop.

Guess what the situation is now !!

The sun appears to be set on a low level of activity.

See http://wattsupwiththat.wordpress.com/2008/02/13/where-have-all-the-sunspots-gone/

During such a period we can expect a much colder planet.  i.e. The Dalton Minimum.

The Dalton Minimum was a period of low solar activity, lasting from about 1790 to 1830 [1]. Like the Maunder Minimum and Sporer Minimum it coincided with a period of lower than average global temperatures. Low solar activity seems to be strongly correlated with global cooling.

This extract from a book sums it up.  I guess if you have any friends who are into global warming they ought to take a look at this information… !!

... [the] weather gets progressively worse and tends toward extremes: heat waves and cold snaps, floods and droughts, frost and snow in the tropics and bizarre hot weather as far north as Scandinavia.

The above quotation is not from a book on global waring but from the best selling book :-

The Cooling: Has the Next Ice Age Already Begun? by Lowell Ponte published in 1976.
