Taking a prescription drug following your medics diagnosis of your problem entails a great deal of trust.  You trust, that he knows what he is doing and has diagnosed the problem correctly.  You also trust that he is prescribing the correct drug for your condition.  You also trust, but probably give it little thought, that the pharmaceutical company who made the drug have produced something which will help with your condition and perhaps most of all will not cause you greater problems by causing subsequent side effects.

Regrettably what we all need to realise is that no pharmaceutical company is in the business because it has a heart of gold and its only aim is to cure or alleviate pain and disease.  No, - each and every company has a premier aim dictated by its principle officers and shareholders and that is to make money. 

So what happens when a drug, which has cost the company millions to make, begins to produce side effects which make it unmarketable ?  You and I know that it should be withdrawn immediately. It seems that the money orientated officers of pharmaceutical companies have other ideas.  Not only do they not withdraw such defective drugs but they use their own in house authors to produce studies to fool doctors into thinking that the drugs are 100%.

The Journal of the American Medical Association claims that the drug company Merck ‘waged a campaign of deception’ to hide the fact that its own in-house study authors pretended to be independent scientists working for universities.  The studies appeared independent and unbiased, thus creating credibility to Federal Drug Authority officials, doctors and other scientists.

Vioxx, one of the best selling drugs earned Merck £2.3 billion in 2003 alone.  It may have been lucrative for the pharma but it caused over 100,000 heart attacks and possibly killed over 50,000 Americans according to Senate testimony by the FDA's own senior drug safety researcher Dr. David Graham.  The Journal claimed Merck knowingly covered up evidence of the dangers faced by patients, by lies and conducting a deliberate campaign of deceptive ghost writing.

Strange isn’t it how alternate, ‘natural’ capsules are sold and never has one sale been shown to kill anyone, let alone tens of thousands, imagine the publicity if it happened. And of course that includes vitamins.

Yet what has recently happened in the press?  A campaign which created headlines in UK papers stating that vitamins would hasten death.  This spin got the headlines whilst Mercks deception and lies hardly a mention.  Today (24.04.2008) we read that  the researchers, led by Isabelle Bairati from the Quebec Research Centre, who published the study, have re-analysed their original data, and have discovered they got it wrong.  The only people in the study who were seeing their cancer return were smokers who refused to kick the habit while they were receiving radiation therapy or chemotherapy. I wonder if the papers will publish this fact on the front page of tomorrows papers ?

If politicians are known to deliberately bury bad news in devious ways it is fair game for a pharmaceutical company I suppose. Yet the campaign, which diverted Mercks lies from the front pages of the press, was itself shown to be spin of the worst  kind. Consequently, the cyanide is released only where there is an active cancer lesion. This liberation of cyanide under controlled and safe conditions insures that an adequate dosage can be administered without the threat of toxic side effects. This absence of cyanide toxicity is further insured by the action of rhodanese, another enzyme. This enzyme is present in large quantities in normal cells but in very small amounts in cancer cells.

Detoxification of cyanide occurs, therefore, in normal mammalian tissue through the action of this rhodanese which, in the presence of sulphur- bearing compounds, converts free cyanide to thiocyanate, a perfectly non-toxic compound.
