Prostate cancer survival rates are not generally banded about.........  This sounds good.

A long-term study revealing the longest reported Prostate Cancer Cure Rates in the world has

been presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Orlando.

If you had asked a medic how long any particular 'treatment' (not cure) would last then you would have been assured that after the treatment you would be 'clear' or you would have 'beaten' the cancer or similar phrases.  What medics would not tell you in the main is that to them if you lived five years after the treatment then that was satisfactory.

The problem was and is that during that time, 're-occurance' would often occur.  The point is that it it is not a new cancer, it is the old cancer which has not been eliminated.

Prostate cancer is very hard to eliminate by conventional aggressive treatments, surgery or bracytherapy etc. and the very act of such treatments can it appears in some cases cause spread or as advised below produce problems which curtail, spoil, a mans previous lifestyle.

Having said that this study shows that some treatments are better than others, although you have to realise that the study was done I believe by the man who carried out the treatments.  Not having dug deeply into the study we have to assume that those men followed up all had the same degree of cancers when treated.  That some effort was made to make sure that all the cancers were aggressive rather than pussy cats !

"These patients were treated with combination radiation therapy, a protocol for which Dattoli has been a noted pioneer. In the Prostate Cancer Cure Rates Study, the men were first treated with daily 3-D conformal pelvic radiation, followed by palladium-103 brachytherapy (seed implant) using generous margins.

Cure, defined as "actuarial freedom from biochemical (disease) progression" was found to be 82% at 16 years (89% for intermediate-risk patients; 74% for high-risk)".

You can download a press release of the study here....http://www.prweb.com/pdfdownload/2206914/pr.pdf

Finally you have to realise that the men who had the treatments may in some cases have had continuing problems following the radiation, with damage to their bowels and/or other organs in the area.  Some could have had problems with the migration of seeds following the bracytherapy treatment.   So whilst the claim is that this treatment can extend life to 16 years in a high percentage of patients it is only fair to point out, that side effects can occur not only following a radical prostatectomy but also following radiation and bracytherapy.

Flavour of the year is a robotic radical prostatectomy,  but do they carry any risks over and above a conventional radical ?

This study says possibly yes........

This U.S. site gives very good comprehensive information on prostate cancer.  BUT it covers mainstream conventional thoughts and advice and information.  i.e. there is no information about anything alternative.  Many, indeed most people, go for that.  They feel that they can trust, (they accept that medics have the answer to the problem), their medics totally.  Others like me are not so sure.  After over 16 years reading and replying to your letters, constant reading of books magazines about prostate disease, I know that medics do not have all the answers.

Many medics, you will find, would not have the treatments which are recommended.

The main reason is that in many cases the treatment is often worse than the disease.

Certainly many very early diagnosed prostate cancers for instance will never become aggressive and kill you. This means that you would have to live for the rest of your life with any agressive treatments you may have been pressured to take. There is also a view that cutting into a tumour can in fact release into the blood stream parts of it which can cause spread.

If you dig into information about prostate and breast cancer, both hormone driven, you will find that many have achieved a 'cure' by using alternate treatments.  Read the monthly Newsletters above for detail of some of these.  What is most important is that there is no panic.  You don't have to do anything today or tomorrow or even next week.  Ignore any urging to rush a decision by medics, or family.

Research, research, read read read..... It is your life,  your cancer.  It should be totally your decision, a decision based on knowledge not on blind panic and outside pressure.

Good luck.
